Attribute Swapping is a Minecraft PvP technique that allows Player 1 to combine properties of two different items during an attack or item use.

The basic idea is pretty simple. You start an action with one item, then switch to another item at the right moment. If the timing is correct, Minecraft can process parts of the action using properties from both items.
For example, you can start an attack with a strong sword and then swap to a Breach-enchanted mace. This can let the attack keep the sword's damage while also applying the mace's Breach enchantment and smash attack properties.
Attribute Swapping is considered a game mechanic exploit rather than an intended part of Minecraft's combat system. Even so, it has become an important technique in modern PvP, especially with mace and spear combat.
Version note: Attribute Swapping was changed in Minecraft 26.2. The techniques in this guide apply to versions and servers where the mechanic is still available, including 1.21.11 and servers using plugins that preserve it.
Attribute Swapping comes down to doing something with one item and changing to another at a very specific point in the action.
The first item can determine things such as the attack cooldown or damage, while the second item can contribute other properties like enchantments, reach, or weapon-specific behavior.
Exactly what gets carried over depends on the items involved and the type of swap.
A simple way to think about it is:
Prepare Item 1 → perform the action → switch to Item 2 → let the action finish
The timing is the important part. If you switch too early, the game may simply treat the second item as the item you are attacking with. If you switch too late, the first item may already have completed the relevant part of the attack.
The exact inputs change depending on the swap, but most of them follow the same general idea.
The switch needs to happen extremely close to the attack or use input.
This is also why attribute swaps can feel inconsistent when you first learn them. A difference of only a small amount of timing can be enough to turn a successful swap into a normal attack.
Breach Swapping combines the damage of one weapon with the Breach enchantment and other relevant properties of a mace.

A common setup is a strong Netherite Sword and a Breach-enchanted mace. You attack with the sword and immediately switch to the mace.
When done correctly, the resulting hit can retain the sword's attack damage while using the mace's Breach enchantment and smash attack properties.
This can result in much higher Breach damage than simply attacking with the mace itself.
Charged sword → attack → switch to Breach mace
Timing is extremely important here. The swap needs to happen very close to the attack input.
Lunge Swapping is used to repeatedly get the Lunge behavior of a spear without having to wait for the spear's normal cooldown.
The idea is to perform the action using something with a much shorter attack cooldown and then switch to the Lunge-enchanted spear at the correct point.
A common setup uses an empty hand or another fast-cooldown item before switching to the spear.
This lets the faster cooldown act as the timing source while still allowing the spear's Lunge behavior to be applied.
Lunge is a spear-exclusive enchantment. When used with the spear's Jab attack, it propels the player horizontally in the direction they are looking.
Fast-cooldown item → attack → switch to Lunge spear
The timing still depends on the cooldown of the item being used as the timing source, so that cooldown needs to be ready before attempting the swap.
Reach Swapping uses the spear's extended attack range together with properties from another weapon.
The goal is to attack using another weapon's relevant properties while still getting the spear's increased reach.
This is useful when the opponent is outside the normal range of the weapon you want to use.
Prepare the required attack → switch to spear → attack
The exact order and timing can change depending on the setup being used, so different Reach Swap setups may require different timings.
Axe Shield Swap combines an attack from another item with the axe's ability to disable shields.
This is useful against players who are blocking with a shield while allowing another item's properties to be used for the attack.
The technique is commonly associated with shield combat and is specifically supported by attribute-swap-fixing plugins as an attribute-swapping interaction.
Prepare the attack → switch to axe → hit the shielded Player 2
The timing matters because the axe's shield-disabling behavior needs to be included in the resulting action.
The main advantage of Attribute Swapping is that it lets you get around limitations that normally keep certain weapon properties separate.
Depending on the setup, it can be used to:
Because of this, Attribute Swapping has become a significant part of modern mace and spear PvP.
Timing is easily the most important part of learning Attribute Swapping.
The swap has to happen close enough to the attack or use input for Minecraft to process the relevant properties together.
If you switch too early, the second item can become the normal item used for the attack.
If you switch too late, the original item may finish the attack before the second item has a chance to affect it.
There isn't one universal timing that works for every swap either. Breach Swapping, Lunge Swapping, Reach Swapping, and other techniques can all require different timings.
Dedicated practice tools can be used to detect successful swaps and even measure their timing down to the sub-tick level.
The second item may become the normal item used for the attack instead of receiving the properties you were trying to swap.
The original item can finish the attack before the second item affects it.
For cooldown-based techniques such as Lunge Swapping, the item being used as the timing source needs to have its cooldown ready.
Swapping items doesn't remove the need to actually hit Player 2. The attack still has to connect.
Not every combination creates a useful or successful attribute swap. Some combinations simply result in a normal attack.
Attribute Swapping lets you combine properties from different items by switching between them at the right point during an attack or use.
The general idea is:
Prepare Item 1 → attack/use → switch to Item 2
What you actually get from the swap depends on the items involved and the specific technique.
Some of the most common applications are:
All of them rely heavily on timing, and different swaps can require completely different timings and item combinations.
Attribute Swapping remains available on versions and servers that preserve the mechanic, although it was officially changed in Minecraft 26.2.
